Network Development

Network development refers to investments to expand, strengthen, renovate and modernize the networks, as well as infrastructure, systems and equipment of the Network Operator and the Non-Interconnected Islands (NII) Electric System Operator, which mainly aim to:

– serve electricity demand, including dealing with changes in load or generation characteristics
– meet the needs of connecting new users or modifying existing user connections
– improve the reliability of the Network and the quality of services
– meet safety requirements of Network operation and protection of the environment
– reduce the total long-term cost of the Network
– Operator’s response to its duties in the most economical way
The development of the Network is planned on an annual basis. A key tool is the Network Development Plan, which is drawn up by the Network Operator and approved by RAE, and identifies the main axes of development of the Network with a five-year time horizon. The implementation of Network development is monitored through Development Programs drawn up on an annual basis by the Operator, based on the current Network Development Plan.

More information regarding the criteria and related procedures are included in the Network Operation Code. Information on planning and development of the Network can be found here: (note 8)
